Acer eyes 14 percent of the server market

 CRN Network

After formally launching its enterprise server range, Acer India has set a target of garnering around 14 percent of Indian server market in unit terms by the end of 2010. The company has introduced a range of tower, rack and blade servers.

“Comprising 17 SKUs, our server range is comparable to any established player’s in the market,” said S Rajendran, Chief Marketing Officer, Acer India.

The vendor has strategically positioned a new server form factor Gemini. “One of the highest density rack server platform in the market currently, Gemini series can be scaled up to 96 cores and 192GB RAM—all packed in a single 2U box,” claimed Saji Kumar, Head Product Marketing, Acer India. “It is positioned for customers who need more than a rack, and are not yet ready for blade servers.”

Acer has been selling the server range, since early this year, to select customers in education and government sectors, Rajendran disclosed. “According to Gartner India report, we had a market share of 7.5 percent in Q1 FY2010-11—mainly due to large deals bagged from those sectors.”

Within this quarter, the vendor will introduce a web configurator tool for partners to configure servers for specific customer requirements. The tool is currently under beta testing, informed Rajendran.

In keeping with its server foray, Acer plans to enhance its Select Channel Program too. “Targeted at mid-market resellers, the program has been largely focused around PC sales. We will add more features to make it attractive for partners to engage with us for the entire gamut of offerings—PCs, servers and eventually storage,” opined Rajendran. “The server range will give us a wider and deeper customer engagement in accounts that want to standardize on one vendor and will also boost our commercial PC sales,” added WS Mukund, Managing Director, Acer India.
