HP India Loses Printers Market Share in Q3

 CRN Network, November 19, 2009, 1030

Market leader HP saw negative growth of nearly 32 percent in Q3 2009 in the printers, copiers and MFP segment, shaving off almost 10 percent of its market share during the period, according to a latest Gartner report. The biggest market share gainer has been Canon, which posted a 48 percent growth in overall printer shipments thus growing its market share from 11 percent in Q3 2008 to 19 percent in Q3 2009.

Epson too saw a growth of 14 percent in unit shipments. On the other hand, several other top-tier vendors experienced significant shipment declines in the Q3 of 2009. Shipment declines by vendors such as Xerox with a 58 percent decrease, followed by Panasonic with 39 percent, HP at 32 per cent, Brother with 28 percent and Samsung Electronics with 21 per cent decline primarily contributed to overall decline of the market.

According to Gartner, the combined printer, copier and multifunctional product (MFP) market in India totaled nearly six lakh units in the third quarter of 2009—a 15.7 per cent decline over the third quarter of 2008,.

“Though the market declined year on year, there was a growth of 10 percent as compared to the second quarter in 2009,” said Vishal Tripathi, Principal Research Analyst at Gartner. “Sentiments are improving in India and the Indian printer market has seen positive response, with consumers and businesses again starting to spend on print devices.”

In the Indian printer, copier and MFP market, with the exception of Canon and Epson, three of the top-five vendors recorded a decline in the Q3 of 2009. For the first time, Canon replaced HP from its No. 1 position in the Indian page printer market with a market share of 38.7 per cent as compared to 36.2 per cent of HP.

Canon with 21 per cent market share has emerged as No.1 in A3 Flatbed Copier/MFP in the third quarter of 2009. Increased focused on smaller cities and adding more partners has helped Canon attain this growth.

Epson grew 48 per cent in the third quarter of 2009 as compared to the same period last year, due to 22 percent growth in serial dot matrix printers and 27 per cent in flatbed Inkjet devices. New distribution networks and partner training programs helped Epson grow in the Indian market.

The biggest loss was incurred by HP, which saw a 55 per cent decline in laser printers and an overall decline of 32.1 percent in the third quarter of 2009 over the third quarter of 2008. This was primarily due to stock issues.

“With improving market conditions, we estimate single high digit growth in the Indian market in the fourth quarter of 2009,” said Tripathi.

I am not surprised in the loss of market share in the third quarter because during this period I experienced a debacle in your communications with your customers. To a simple request for a paid service, I have not received a satisfactory reply for last two months. I asked for this service because my telephone line was good enough to support Fax operations. Due to delay of the telephone line service provider to give me a satisfactory line, I could not ask for a demonstration during guarantee period. When I asked for paid service after 6 months of date of purchase the only response I got from the on line service provider was that he/she was not authorized. Why can’t the response include the contact address of the source (if one such exists !). If such a source is non existent you only experienced a sharp fall should be consoling. If you want to improve, make amends on the service front and give it wide publicity
