Power outages cost India Inc Rs 43,000 crore

 CRN Network

Emerson Network Power, along with MAIT, recently announced the findings of a study to analyze the impact of downtime on corporate India due to the high occurrence of power outages, scheduled and non-scheduled.
It estimated the total revenue loss due to downtime at Rs 43,205 crore in 2008-09 for businesses across various verticals.
This figure has more than doubled since 2003 when the amount of direct losses due to outages was estimated at around Rs 22,000 crore.
Of the various industries affected, the findings indicate that the manufacturing vertical was the worst-hit, followed by verticals that include SMBs, retail, healthcare, hospitality, real estate and infrastructure.
The impact of outages was observed to be much less for verticals such as telecom and BFSI since these verticals have already adopted solutions like captive power systems to counter power outages.
