Google, Bing Gain Share While Yahoo Falls

By Stefanie Hoffman, ChannelWeb, November 18, 2009, 1330

Both Google and Microsoft Bing are inching forward in the search engine space with modest market share gains for October, while contender Yahoo took a few steps backward as its share declined once again.

Google, which still dominates the search engine market, made modest gains in share, from 64.9 percent to 65.4 percent, and showed 9.4 million core searches, a 4 percent month-over-month increase, according to market analyst firm comScore.

While Yahoo still remains in second place behind Google, market share fell slightly from 18.8 percent in September to a flat 18 percent in October, according to comScore. Yahoo's recent losses represent a steady decline in market share over the last 12 months.

Microsoft's new search engine, Bing, also grew slightly in the search engine market to hold a 9.9 percent share, placing it third in the search space.

Microsoft has placed great hopes in Bing. Earlier this year, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer promised the Bing would succeed, saying it is "as good a demonstration of our tenacity and commitment as anything you've ever seen."

Overall, the total core search market increased by 3 percent to 14.31 billion queries, according to comScore.
