We are running a retail store in the heart of the city. However, whenever we recruit sales staff and impart the necessary training, they change over to other companies. What can we do retain our staff?

Chirag, Creative Computers

VINAYA — Chirag, have you tried undertaking an exit interview to understand why they leave? Have you ever tried doing an employee survey by an external agency to identify employee concerns? The internal environment in your firm may not be motivating for them to continue and if this continues, then you may be not in a position to attract new talent after a while. People join companies because of the company’s reputation, the role and salary but most often they leave because of the boss they work with! Could this be an area of concern? Also, please note that you cannot bind people by bonds/legal agreements—it anyways does not hold good in a democracy. You require some serious initiatives on developing better quality leaders and a more conducive work environment for your employees.

it is good that your establishment is spending a lot on recruitment and necessary training of employees. however, there are other factors that need to be taken into consideration when it comes to retaining them. retail shops usually do not focus on running as a team/unit and customers are to be found walking in and out of the place. Improving team behaviour and serving to customers needs wherever appropriate might help.
