Acer dethrones HP in desktop sales

 CRN Network

In Q1 2010, Acer has edged past HP to become the market leader in the desktop category. According to a recently released report by Gartner India, Acer sold approximately 1,58,000 desktops (commercial and consumer) closely followed by HCL with 1,55,000 units. HP, meanwhile, sold 1,52,000 desktop PCs.

“Thanks to a few large education and government deals that closed last quarter, Acer did significantly well in the desktop space. It also found some success with eMachines, which are very aggressively priced,” observed Diptarup Chakroborti, Principal Analyst, Gartner India.

The report also observes that Dell, which edged past HP in the notebook category in Q4 2009, has clung onto its leadership position albeit by a small margin of 1,000 units. It recorded sales of around 2,06,000 units, followed by HP with 2,05,000. Acer came a distant third with 1,38,000 units.

HP, however, maintained its overall leadership position in the PC market with 3,57,000 PCs sold, followed by Dell selling 3,08,000 units and Acer shipping 2,96,000 units, during this period.

According to Gartner, 2.45 million PCs were sold in India in the last quarter.
