As part of its efforts to develop applications for m-government initiatives, Bharti Airtel has equipped all 650 Bengaluru traffic police officers with BlackBerry smartphones. The smartphones are enabled with Airtel’s enforcement automation system, which is capable of culling out data on more than two million cases in less than two minutes.
Touted as the largest deployment of BlackBerry smartphones for a police department in India, the initiative brings together all aspects of operational traffic policing in one unified system. The solution involves vigilance through video cameras that are set up at different traffic signals, and equipping every Bengaluru traffic police officer with a BlackBerry smartphone and Bluetooth printer.
The system will give the officers access to the history of the driver and the vehicle involved in traffic violation, and allow them to issue challan on the spot with a click of a button. The secure, login-based application assists in determining if the offender has a pending fine against his vehicle. It also allows officials to monitor their staff and generate periodical reports on performance
Commenting on the initiative, Praveen Sood, Additional Commissioner of Police, Traffic department, Bengaluru, said, “The BlackBerry solution from Airtel is a powerful tool. It not only enhances the visibility of a robust and streamlined traffic enforcement system, but also gives us an effective way to control traffic offences.” |
