Open source gurus stole the thunder on the final day of Interop Mumbai. Spread across two sessions, industry leaders and open source evangelists dispelled several myths surrounding open source while ascertaining the virtues of the business model.
Stressing that the battle is no more Windows versus Linux, Venkat Mangudi, President and CEO, Mangudi Consulting said that some of the popular open source projects have a bigger market share and have proved to be more secure, stable and scalable than their commercial alternatives. He cited examples like that of DNS tool BIND, Sendmail, Apache among others.
Nandu Pradhan, President and Managing Director, Red Hat India cited examples of how JBoss, Red Hat’s open source J2EE application server has gained market share across all odds, against some of the best of breed alternatives from vendors such as BEA, Oracle and Sun.
Anil Valluri, Vice President and Managing Director, Sun Microsystems India stressed how Sun has shown the path to thousands of customers to cut down costs during recession by deploying open source.
Professor Rahul De, Hewlett-Packard Chair Professor for Sustainable Economic Development, IIM Bangalore presented his detailed report on economic impact of using open source. “India can save potentially Rs 10,000 crore by adopting open source technologies,” he said. “Government must consider educating public about virtues of free and open source software, and help reduce costs.”
