Pradeep Khemani, Country Manager, Channel and SMB Sales, ESSN, HP India, presenting the award to Sandeep Vahi, Director, Compton Computers

Growing by 72 percent, Compton Computers recorded a turnover of Rs 59.7 crore in FY2009-10 compared to Rs 34.7 crore in FY2008-09. “During the last fiscal, we were able to grow substantially by working more deeply with our existing clients and offering them a larger portfolio of products. We were flexible enough to quickly integrate and disintegrate teams at new locations for project deliveries,” said Sandeep Vahi, Director, Compton.

The year saw Compton deliver 20 highly demanding end-to-end turnkey projects by developing specialization in areas such as data/server room designing, power backup solutions designing, large networks deployment, enterprise switching and WAN optimization. In 2009, it developed expertise in solutions for film post-production studios. It also began offering end-to-end solutions to TV channels. “For select film post-production needs, we designed and integrated our own high throughput storage solutions (NAS and SAN) under the Compton Vault brand,” Vahi said.

Another project was a mall management solution for the newly-launched Viva Mall in Jalandhar. For this project, the company tied up with a software company, ShawMan Software—which specializes in hospitality management software—and developed a complete solution on laters platform.

The third big project implemented by Compton was a learning management system (LMS) for Jamia Hamdard University. Compton designed and developed a complete LMS for Jamia. The solution has automated information about the administration, the kind of courses offered by Jamia, its faculty, fee structure, and facilities for students. Deepak Jadhav, CEO, Enhanced Software Solutions, receiving the trophy

Mumbai-based Enhanced Software Solutions (ESS) posted Rs 39 crore growth in its topline in FY2009-10, a 45 percent growth from FY2008-09’s Rs 27 crore. CEO Deepak Jadhav attributed this impressive growth, even in the recessionary phase, to deep selling, acquisition of new accounts, addition of new products, and value-added services.

ESS’ bottomline also showed an equivalent 45 percent growth during the year. “Value-added services helped us to improve margins, the addition of new products helped in deep selling, while a solutions-selling approach helped in the acquisition of new accounts,” he said About 50 percent of ESS’ revenue came from solutions, while 40 percent was contributed by services. Systems integration services accounted for the remaining 10 percent.

Among the key projects ESS implemented in FY2009-10 were a Rs 4 crore server and storage consolidation and DR solution implementation for a large insurance company; a Rs 1.5 crore automated IT asset management and security compliance project for an ITES company; and a project to enable centralized backup over WAN for more than 100 branches of another insurance company without increasing its bandwidth requirement. ESS also helped a large consulting company in the design and implementation of its enterprise backup solution.

According to Jadhav, the technical expertise of its sales force has helped the company understand customer requirements better and provide better solutions to customers. “Our sales people are more like pre-sales guys who have more technical than sales orientation. As a result, they pick up customer requirements accurately and are able to provide the best-suited solution. This improves customer confidence and satisfaction, and enables a higher ratio of closure of leads.”

ESS enables regular training and reskilling for various verticals for its employees, informed Jadhav. “We also offer them opportunities to work on challenging projects in which they get hands-on exposure and a feeling of ownership. Compensation that’s above industry average and medical insurance for the entire family keeps them motivated and allows them to concentrate on their work.”

In FY2010-11, ESS plans to add more security-related solutions and services to its portfolio while increasing its exposure to the media industry. The company also plans to increase its geographical footprint by increasing its presence in Gujarat. ESS will also aim at getting more of its employees certified in various technologies in FY2010-11, Jadhav informed.

The company attributed the growth to its focus on virtualization, storage consolidation, IT security, and specialization in ERP deployment.

“Last year, sensing the mood of customers, we focused on technologies that could deliver cost savings and make IT infrastructure more efficient. We ventured into providing ERP solutions, IT security and storage consolidation,” informed Mukundh B, CEO, Mukesh Infoserve.

The company bagged a large project worth Rs 1.6 crore from Expo Freight to consolidate and virtualize its data center. It executed a Rs 1.10-crore project for Royal Sundaram which included providing the entire systems, storage and networking infrastructure.

For Amaraja Batteries, Mukesh Infoserve implemented a desktop virtualization solution using blade servers and thin clients. The project was worth Rs 25 lakh.

For an upcoming 7-star ITC hotel in Chennai, the company deployed campus-wide networking worth Rs 62 lakh.

According to Mukundh, “The key focus last year was to go after new accounts to counter the impact of the slowdown. Following our increasing focus on solutions, we restructured the teams into product management, pre-sales and proof-of-concept sales. We set targets for each business group for the acquisition of new accounts. As a result of these changes, we added 750 new small and large customers during the last fiscal.”

The company, which implemented SAP B1 in FY2008-09, streamlined its operations around the ERP. It also automated its HR using Reylon’s HRMS. “In 2009 we re-engineered our business processes to derive real benefits from SAP. Also, automating the HR processes gave us a single-window view of our skill set. Besides, it helped us to plan our projects better, and appraise employee performance in an effective and fair manner,” said Mukundh.

Providing managed infrastructure services is a key focus area for Mukesh Infoserve in the current fiscal. In addition, it intends to strengthen its ERP consultancy and implementation practice. The company will start new offices in the north and east, and explore opportunities in tier-2 cities.
