Wipro has staked claims of leadership in energy efficient PC server space vis-à-vis the competition. The company unveiled a suite of servers ranging from single processor racks to blade systems scaling up to 576 cores.
"We have managed to grab the leadership position in shipping energy-efficient servers by accomplishing new benchmarks in each class of servers. This has been due to a combination of efforts from innovative R&D and faster go-to-market strategies," informed Venkat Sitaram, Group Product Manager, Wipro NetPower.
The products are being manufactured at the company’s factory in Pondicherry. Wipro has taken some innovative steps in making the SMPS (switch mode power supplies) of the servers more efficient. "Standard server power supplies work at efficiencies just less than 80 percent. We are using better quality power supplies that guarantee an efficiency of around 93 percent, thus increasing efficiency by 16 percent," explained Sitaram.
Sitaram takes the example of a NetPower Z1107, a single processor 1 U box from Wipro. "Unlike competition like Dell, IBM or HP who all sport 345-350 W SMPS, the Z1107 is powered by just 260 W SMPS. The SMPS is further more energy efficient compared to the competition which makes us almost 50 percent more energy efficient," pointed out Sitaram.
"We are betting on our new range of servers to help us with some data center wins this year," he added.
The new set of servers all sport Intel's new Quad Core Xeons that are considered to be more efficient. Sitaram does not rule out shipping new products sporting the AMD's new Shanghai chips. |
