Iomega Bullish On NAS With IP Surveillance Solutions

By Amit Singh, CRN, December 26, 2011, 0900 hrs

Expanding outreach of its SMB NAS products, Iomega has joined forces with Tulip Telecom and MindTree to offer cloud-based video surveillance storage management solutions focused on the Soho and SMB segments. These solutions involve Iomega StorCenter network storage devices with MindTree’s SecureMind Surveillance Manager video management software, and Tulip’s national broadband network with cloud data centers, and would be available on all Iomega StorCenter ix and px series.

The central Home Ministry’s diktats to the managements of malls, hotels and other public places to install CCTVs and store video footage has opened a new window of opportunity. Since performance is not very critical in such projects, the storage would be done by using SMB NAS boxes instead of the more expensive enterprise boxes. Presently, the Indian NAS market is growing at 12-14 percent annually, and Iomega wants 100 percent growth in its NAS revenue in 2012 with major contribution from the video surveillance solutions.

“We expect 50 percent growth from the NAS products for video surveillance solutions. Out of our partner base of 860, we would focus on our 200 NAS partners, and add 100 small SI partners by 2012 specifically for surveillance solutions. Currently, we are focused on training and educating our existing partners. Our marketing activities would include advertisements and advertorials in magazines, newspapers and Websites for lead generation; and creating awareness through the social media. We will also support our partners through roadshows as well as live and virtual demos,” said Praveen Sahai, Director Sales – India and Saarc, Iomega.

The company estimates the video surveillance market in India at $225 million in 2011. As per the IMS Research report (2010 edition), the total market for video surveillance in Asia was estimated to have been worth over $3.3 billion in 2009, and forecast to grow at a CAGR of 15.2 percent to be worth over $6.7 billion in 2014. The network video surveillance equipment market was estimated to have been worth $511.4 million in 2009, and forecast to grow at a CAGR of 32.8 percent to be worth over $2.1 billion in 2014.

“Terrorist attacks, government directives, and business efficiency are some of the key drivers for surveillance market. Although the video surveillance market is dominated by analog surveillance with about 90 percent share, the contribution of IP surveillance is increasing pertaining to the demand for better quality recording, scalability, and support from organized players. However, the video surveillance market in India is largely focused on the large enterprises and has not fully addressed the needs of SMBs and the Indian consumers. This partnership looks to provide video surveillance services based on cloud technology to the SMBs and Soho,” said Sahai.

Iomega would leverage on 2400 broadband network users of Tulip to expand its NAS footprint. The solution will also be complemented by Tulip’s data centre launched earlier this year in Bengaluru with capacity of approx 900,000 square feet.

“Currently, the contribution of SMB segment to the total video surveillance market in India is less than 20 percent. However, with various civic bodies chalking plans to make it mandatory for all businesses to set up surveillance cameras in their premises, small businesses and distributed enterprises like small hotels, restaurants, retail outlets, small financial firms, jewelry shops, hold immense potential for growth. With this partnership, we expect 20 percent market share in the SMB space for video surveillance by 2013,” said Sanjay Jain, CEO, Tulip Telecom.

“We believe our network of about 1,000 channel partners in India and corporate data connectivity services will strongly compliment the product in reaching businesses which have been evaluating the adoption of video surveillance solution for their business operations,” he added.

The price of the solution range starts from Rs 25,000 for a standard set up with two cameras, to Rs 12 lakhs with 48 cameras and upto 36 TB storage. “These solutions are supported by 24x7 L1/L2 support from Iomega customer care center and L3 onsite support from Tata ELXSI with presence in 21 cities,” added Sahai.
