Wipro unveils energy-efficient servers

Wipro has staked a claim to leadership in the energy-efficient PC server space vis-à-vis the competition. The company has unveiled a suite of servers ranging from single processor racks to blade systems scaling up to 576 cores.

“We have managed to grab the leadership position in shipping energy-efficient servers by accomplishing new benchmarks in each class of servers. This has been due to a combination of efforts including innovative R&D and faster go-to-market strategies,” informed Venkat Sitaram, Group Product Manager, Wipro NetPower.

The products are being manufactured at the company’s factory in Pondicherry.

Wipro has taken some innovative steps in making the SMPS (switch mode power supplies) of the servers more efficient. “Standard power supplies work at efficiencies of less than 80 percent. We are using better quality power supplies that guarantee an efficiency of around 93 percent, thus increasing efficiency by 16 percent,” explained Sitaram.

He cited the example of NetPower Z1107, a single processor 1 U box from Wipro. “Unlike competition, which all sport 345-350 W SMPS, the Z1107 is powered by just 260 W SMPS.  Since our SMPS is also more
energy-efficient compared to competition, this makes us almost 50 percent more energy-efficient,” Sitaram stated, adding, “We are betting on our new range of servers to help us with some data center wins this year.”

The new set of servers all sport Intel’s new Quad Core Xeons. Sitaram did not rule out shipping new products with AMD’s new Shanghai chips.
