OpenStack, a non-profit organization promoting open source cloud computing software, wants to increase its presence in India.

The organization has formed a three -pronged strategy—launching new products and features, tapping organizations deploying cloud computing, and training the vast channel base of its alliance partners who have a strong presence in the country.

Mark Collier, COO, OpenStack, affirmed, “After the US, India and China are the most important countries for us. We will target the large organizations that are either in the process of deploying, or have a cloud computing strategy in place. And cloud computing requires a lot of business transformation because of the cultural shift and dramatic changes in processes."

Partners can educate customers and increase awareness about OpenStack and its benefits such as agility, increase in productivity and faster response time, he said.

To further enable partners, the foundation is adding new features and products to the OpenStack portfolio. “We have introduced 400 features on OpenStack and recently added the orchestration and metering features—the two most important aspects for resource allocation and to use data points to drive orchestration and automation,” he detailed.

Citing a recently concluded survey (whose results are still being analyzed), Collier said that many large organizations are using OpenStack to port mission critical applications such as SaaS and video content on SaaS, the QA and cache environments on database, virtual desktops for VDI, scientific research and big data on Hadoop, across verticals.

Once customers see a standard emerging, they would require support for solutions and partners can utilize this opportunity to earn services revenues, he said. “All our alliance members have a strong local presence in India, and successful partner programs. Also many of their channel partners have shown interest in OpenStack, and some have already started pitching it to their customers.  Once OpenStack gains acceptance among customers, and achieves some scale, the OEMs would include training as a part of partner training,” he added.

The foundation is banking on rising adoption of cloud computing in large, mid-size and SMB organizations—a trillion dollar market globally by 2020, Collier felt that the market for OpenStack has just opened up.
