Gartner has unveiled its top strategic predictions for 2026 and beyond, spotlighting how the rapid acceleration of artificial intelligence (AI) will reshape global business, technology, and talent ecosystems. The predictions were announced at the Gartner IT Symposium/Xpo in Orlando, Fla., and are grouped into three core categories — Talent in the AI Age, Sovereignty, and Insidious AI.
“The risks and opportunities of rapid technology change are increasingly affecting human behavior and choices,” said Daryl Plummer, VP, Distinguished Analyst, Gartner Fellow, and Chief of AI Research at Gartner. “To properly prepare for the future, CIOs and executive leaders should prioritize behavioral changes alongside technological ones as first-order priorities.”

Key Predictions

  • GenAI Redefines Productivity Tools: By 2027, the use of generative AI (GenAI) and AI agents will disrupt mainstream productivity tools for the first time in 30 years, driving a $58 billion market shift.

  • AI Skills Become Hiring Currency: 75% of hiring processes will include AI proficiency assessments by 2027, making GenAI literacy a key differentiator in the job market.

  • Critical Thinking in Demand: As dependence on AI grows, 50% of organizations will introduce “AI-free” assessments to evaluate independent thinking and cognitive ability.

  • Rise of Regional AI Ecosystems: 35% of countries will be tied to region-specific AI platforms using proprietary contextual data by 2027, reflecting growing localization and sovereignty concerns.

  • Multiagent AI Dominance: By 2028, firms leveraging multiagent AI for 80% of customer-facing processes will outperform peers, delivering faster, low-effort customer experiences.

  • AI-Driven B2B Commerce: 90% of B2B buying will be mediated by AI agents by 2028, representing over $15 trillion in spend.

  • AI Liability on the Rise: By 2026, “death by AI” legal claims are projected to exceed 1,000 globally, as organizations face scrutiny over AI safety and governance.

  • Programmable Money Emerges: By 2030, 22% of monetary transactions will include programmable conditions, giving AI agents limited economic agency.

  • Process Reinvention through Agentic AI: AI-driven process reinvention will cut the cost-to-value gap for service contracts by 50% by 2027.

  • AI Regulation Expands Rapidly: Fragmented AI regulations will cover half the global economy by 2027, driving $5 billion in compliance spending.

These predictions collectively emphasize that AI transformation will be as much about governance and human adaptation as it is about technological advancement.
