The Covid-19 pandemic has certainly accelerated the adoption of cloud technologies by organizations, but hybrid storage is here to stay. A staggering 41% of organizations around the Asia Pacific, Europe, North America and South America use the cloud to store off-site data, with the intention to restore data back on an on-premise location, suggesting that not all organizations are moving everything to the cloud permanently, according to Veeam Cloud Protection Trends 2021 report.

The Veeam Cloud Protection Trends 2021 report surveyed more than 1,500 IT leaders around 14 countries who hold technical decision‑maker roles were surveyed about their IaaS, PaaS and SaaS challenges, usage drivers, personas and backup perceptions.

The report states that “IT world is undeniably hybrid and not in “transition” before the data centre goes away. There will be a mix of physical, virtual, and hosted for the foreseeable extended future – so organizations will need to continue managing this hybrid state for their data protection.

During COVID, organizations looked to cloud-hosted IT delivery models including infrastructure as a service (IaaS) for production and disaster recovery, as well as software as a service (SaaS) and containers.

Key findings of the report include:

  • Public cloud is now a primary means of storing and delivering organizations’ data, 56% of the respondents in the Asia Pacific and Japan (APJ) say that they have been using the public cloud in production for more than 24 months
  • In the Asia Pacific, 40% of respondents back up data belonging to containerized applications separately.
  • Despite the uptake in IaaS for disaster recovery, the public cloud does pose additional challenges. More than half of APJ respondents faced the following challenges when using or testing the public cloud for Disaster Recovery
    • Securing the remote site against cyber-attack or access
    • Network configuration during testing, while production is still functional
    • Connectivity for users within corporate locations
